If you're in New Plymouth over the next few weeks, head out to Puke Ariki to check out the new Homework exhibition - this features artists from all over the Taranaki area, and I'm super stoked to be part of it all, showing a photograph, alongside all these seasoned, talented artists. Also a little amused at how they captioned my work, and slightly horrified at how un-photogenic I am (although I keep telling myself it makes me a better photographer - I think all you wonderfully photogenic people out there are in a small minority) in my bio.
So my piece was from a portrait shoot I did with a girl Hannah, who at the ripe old age of 16, already has suffered far beyond her years as she has had to negotiate all the twists and turns that having cerebral palsy has thrown at her. She has a beautiful story though and this sweetness and optimism that really challenged me - she really embraces life, maybe all the more so for having had to fight for it. You can read a little of her story in a recent stuff article when she came runner up in Miss Teen Taranaki. Here is one of my shots from that shoot, and you'll just have to head along to Puke Ariki to see which one I'm showing.
